Two Questionable Aspects of the Improved Chicago Bears Roster

It is no secret that the Bears have steadily built a playoff-worthy roster. They wasted no time re-tooling after their third consecutive losing season, trading away fan favorite QB Justin Fields in favor of USC QB Caleb Williams whom they took with the first overall pick. Chicago also parted ways with Bears legend Eddie Jackson, promptly replacing him with former All-Pro S Kevin Byard. Other acquisitions include RB D’Andre Swift, TE Gerald Everett, WR Keenan Allen, and WR Rome Odunze whom they drafted with the ninth overall pick. GM Ryan Poles has quickly turned this roster into one of the best in the league. However, among the talent, there remains some uncertainty with two positions.

One of the first moves the Bears made after their season concluded was the firing of OC Luke Getsy and the hiring of former Seahawks OC Shane Waldron. While Waldron commanded an offense led by QB Geno Smith to success, his offense had steadily regressed throughout his three-year stint in Seattle. The Bears have not had the best of luck when it comes to finding offensive coaches, so approach this new Bears offense with a bit of skepticism, regardless of the talent.

Among the many moves the Bears made to improve their roster, improving their pass rush was not one of them. Outside of DE Montez Sweat, the Bears are relying on second-year DL Gervon Dexter Sr. and Zacch Pickens to take the next step. As for the edge rusher opposite Montez Sweat, Demarcus Walker will likely get the nod, with Dominique Robinson and rookie Austin Booker potentially rotating in for reps. While these players have the potential to be foundational members of the pass rush, it remains a question ahead of the 2024 season.

Ryan Poles has done an exceptional job building this roster on both the offensive and defensive sides. Given that the Bears have one of the easier schedules in the league, there is speculation that they could make the playoffs. If the Bears play their cards right with Shane Waldron and Caleb Williams, it’ll take a draft or two before they become a perennial powerhouse in the NFL. Still, opponents need to watch out for the Bears this season because they’re about to shock many people.
