The Bears have officially lost their fourteenth straight game, 31-28, at the hands of the Denver Broncos. The Bears had gained a commanding lead on the Broncos, leading 28-7 just before the end of the third quarter. The Broncos then scored twenty-four unanswered points, completing the comeback off a late-game interception by Justin Fields. Besides that interception, Fields played like he was the franchise guy up until the end of the game. Fields lit up the stat sheet, putting up four passing touchdowns, 335 passing yards, and an 80% completion percentage. However, Fields also had a costly fumble that was returned for a Denver touchdown and a game-sealing interception to Broncos defensive back Kareem Jackson.
With the week four loss, the Bears front office has a lot of questions to answer, and the most important is undoubtedly whether or not Justin Fields is the franchise quarterback. The first three weeks of this season were disappointing, but if Fields can perform like this consistently, then he will buy himself another year. Although Fields’ performance looks like the start of something good, let it be known that Fields was going up against the worst defense in the league. The upcoming week five matchup with the Washington Commanders will be another test for Fields to see if he can perform against better talent.
Another thing to watch is the current coaching and front office situation. Losing fourteen straight games is not good, even if he was given a flawed roster. Eberflus praises a hardworking mentality, but the players don’t care. To go along with that, Getsy has made Fields a worse passer by putting him in a system designed for a pocket-passing quarterback. Fields’ passing has started to improve as the season progresses, so hopefully, he can end next week with another terrific performance and the first win of the 2023 season. Fields isn’t and hasn’t been in a good situation with the Bears, so if he can put together an excellent passing season, there should be no reason the Bears don’t keep him.
