With the Packers 6th loss to the Lions, they now have the 8th Pick in the 2023 draft. The offense has been abysmal, the defense cannot stop the run or the pass, and the team is injury ridden. With only 8 games left in the regular season, and the Packers straying further and further from the playoff race, the question stands, should the Packers tank, and the answer is yes.
1. We need better receivers
There are tons of reasons why the Packers should tank, but I’ll be listing the very main reasons why. The first one is because we have no offensive threats at wide receiver. The Packers went into this season with a lot of hope in their new receiving core, and that hope did nothing at all. Sure, Romeo Doubs is great and will be a big contributor in years to come, but other than that, there’s really no one to throw the ball to. Sure, Allen Lazard is a solid wide receiver, but there is no reason that he should be a number 1 or 2 receiver. The Packers need help at the position, and one of the only ways they’re going to get it is through the draft. Free agency would’ve been an option if it weren’t for the fact that we need to pay guys such as Darnell Savage, Rashan Gary and Elgton Jenkins. If the Packers continue to lose, they can definitely get a top tier receiver in the earlier picks and revitalize this dying offense.
2. Aaron Rodgers might retire.
Aaron Rodgers has had one of his worst statistical years in recent memory so far, and part of the blame is definitely on him. He doesn’t look like the back to back MVP in games, and he sure isn’t playing like it. A lot of analysts think that this might be his last year in the NFL, and if that is the case, the Packers would look to Jordan Love. Jordan Love has played a total of 6 games including one start, and has put up numbers that consist of 411 yards, 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. A lot of Packers fans are hopeful that he’ll pick up where rodgers left off, but I just dont think that’s the case. If you take a second to look at his film, he is not NFL ready by any means. Thats a scary thought considering that he’s been in the league for 3 years now, and we have yet to see any sort of progression in his game. This is why the Packers should tank, because if Aaron Rodgers retires, they could easily get a guy in the low 1st or 2nd round, and have a back up plan in case Love doesn’t end up panning out.
3. There’s no chance of a Packers super bowl this season.
The Packers roster is just not a super bowl caliber roster. Compared to teams like the Eagles, Vikings, and Buccaneers, the Packers are just not on their level currently. Rashan Gary is out for the season, Romeo Doubs is going to miss some time, and Randall Cobb isn’t coming back for a while, and this is just naming a few players for the Packers that are out with injuries. The Packers currently have 17 players on their injury report, and considering the way this season has gone, I don’t see that number getting smaller. Even if with some miracle, the Packers get a 6th or 7th seed, I just don’t see them keeping up with teams with a more complete roster. That’s why they just need to tank for a season, and build up a roster for next season
