Three Players the Bears Should Avoid in Free Agency

The Bears head into the 2023 Free Agency period sitting comfortably at the top of the cap space list. Many fans expect a multitude of deals and signings to take place, but it is important that the Bears do not overspend. If we make random signings just to leave an exclamation point, it could end up negative for the team’s development in the future. It is vital that Chicago prioritizes finding the best fits for the roster at a relatively good expense. Obviously, Chicago isn’t an ideal landing spot for many free agents and the Bears may find themselves throwing in a little extra cash to deals. If that is the case, we better make sure it is for surefire improvements to our roster. This short list will cover the exciting free agents that may have sparked fans’ interest, but shouldn’t be sought after by the Bears.

Orlando Brown Jr.
Make sure not to misinterpret what I say, Orlando Brown is a very solidified tackle. However, he will come with a very hefty price tag. It should be commonly known that an offensive tackle coming off 4 straight pro bowl seasons will be up for big biddings. I do not think it would be worth it though, Brown would accumulate a big chunk of our cap while only filling one positional role. Not to mention the fact that I don’t think Orlando Brown’s season last year was quality enough to grant himself a pro bowl selection. He had a small uptick in penalties, paired with the fact that he was already on a stellar offensive line. Truly, I just don’t believe that if Orlando Brown was isolated that he would put up stellar numbers. Chicago should dig for harder gold to find in this free agent class and should avoid loading out massive paydays to players that in my opinion, are a tad overrated by NFL fans.

Devin Singletary
It is now clear to us that David Montgomery’s time with the Chicago Bears is over. He delivered many satisfactory seasons, but now it is time to move on. Khalil Herbert is set to replace Montgomery and has already proved how talented he is. The Bears will most likely be looking for a running back replacement to replace Montgomery with. However, I do not believe Devin Singletary should be anywhere near Chicago’s sights. Singletary is a mediocre running back at best, and doesn’t do much to improve our roster. I do believe in not spending big money on a running back, and Singletary will be cheap, but it is still a waste regardless of the price. Singletary put up 800 yards on a league average 4.5 y/c in 2022, while not being a huge red zone threat. He was not a huge receiving threat either, averaging 16 receiving yards per game. In conclusion, Devin Singletary is not worthwhile enough of a running back to support the Bears roster.

Odell Beckham Jr.
During this free agency period, the Bears will certainly be looking to help out Justin Fields. That means acquiring 1 or 2 wide receivers, but only under the right circumstances. I could imagine that Odell would be wanting some money for him to join a new team, which is far more than what he is worth. He is unproven on whether he can be consistent in the past few years, and I wouldn’t want the Bears to sign based on name. It wouldn’t be smart to obtain an aging wideout who would have to perform on a boom or bust level. There are plenty of receivers in the draft and free agency who could come at a cheaper price. I figure the Bears don’t really want Odell, but stupidity hasn’t shun them away from making bad signings in the past. I would much rather have a fresh receiver on a rookie contract that we could develop into our system.

I disagree. Orlando Brown Jr. makes a lot of sense. Poles has a connection from KS, and he was ELITE in Baltimore’s offensive scheme, which favors an extremely mobile QB. Chicago’s is very similar. Orlando Brown makes a ton of sense for the Bears.
