Should the Bears Consider Acquiring Jalen Ramsey?

There has been a lot of discussion as to how the Bears will use the 1st pick in the draft and Ryan Poles revealed what the Bears will do. To no one’s surprise, the Bears will be trading the 1st pick in the draft but it is unknown as to who will win the bid for the pick. While there has been a lot of Bears news, there was news that the Rams are going to try and trade their star cornerback, Jalen Ramsey. When I heard the news regarding Jalen Ramsey, I started to think about the possibility of Ramsey getting traded to Chicago, so here is how the Bears should look at the possibility of acquiring Jalen Ramsey:

Jalen Ramsey’s Fit With The Bears:
To me, Jalen Ramsey will for sure fit in Matt Eberflus’ defense with a lot of ease. Jalen Ramsey is easily one of, if not the best CB in the NFL. He would match up perfectly with Jaylon Johnson and the Bears would get a major boost in the secondary. Ramsey in 2022 did not see as much success with the Rams in years prior as injuries hit the Rams in a big way, which caused them to have a 5-12 record in the 2022-23 season. Now while the Rams season was unsuccessful, that did not slow down Jalen Ramsey as he ranks as the 3rd best CB in the NFL, according to PFF Ratings. Jalen Ramsey’s high level of play and energy is a no brainer for his fit with the Bears and not to mention, Jalen Ramsey and Johnson would be one of the best CB duos in the NFL.

The Cap Space:
When it comes to whether or not the Bears can afford Jalen Ramsey, I am not worried whatsoever. I have stated multiple times that with the Bears having the most cap space in the NFL, it opens up a lot of possibilities for the Bears on how they want to improve the roster. When looking at Jalen Ramsey’s contract, he signed a 5 year, 100 million dollar contract with the Rams back in 2022, which will take up a good chunk of the Bears cap space. However, the cap space for the Bears is not an issue whatsoever for the Bears when deciding if they can afford Ramsey.

A potential trade for Jalen Ramsey:
To me, I do not see any team, including the Bears, being willing to give up a first round pick for Jalen Ramsey. The Rams will want a decent amount for Jalen Ramsey, but I would not think it would involve a first round pick so here is what a trade could look like:

Bears Receive: Jalen Ramsey
Rams Receive: Bears 2023 Second Round Pick, 2023 4th Round Pick

I see the Rams receiving very similar offers for Jalen Ramsey as teams would not want to trade their first round picks for Ramsey. While Jalen Ramsey is extremely talented, teams will be very strategic in attempting to acquire Ramsey. From the Bears side of the table, this is probably the best offer they could give the Rams as the Bears need their first round picks in helping improve other holes on the roster.

The Final Verdict:
After looking at the different aspects for the Bears when considering Jalen Ramsey, I believe the Bears should not trade for Jalen Ramsey. Do not get me wrong, I would love Jalen Ramsey on the Bears and I think he would bring a positive impact to the team but the Bears honestly do not need to improve the CB position. The Bears will be looking to fix other holes on this team and it will require the Bears to make good use of their draft capital and money. Cornerback is not a concern for this Bears team as other defensive and offensive positions need improvement. I would also like to think that the Rams will try to be greedy when talking to other teams about trades and it may even drag the process out for a Jalen Ramsey departure. For the Bears, Jalen Ramsey is not and never was a necessity, but anything is possible in the NFL.
