During our week eight matchup versus the Green Bay Packers in an early division rival game Vikings MVP caliber quarterback, Kirk Cousins, suffered a non-contact injury that through MRI’s we found out later was a season ending torn Achilles. Vikings 25 year old rookie quarterback Jaren Hall out of BYU then replaced Cousins for the remainder of the fourth quarter.
The Vikings are now in a position that has not been a problem since Kirk’s initial contract signing in 2018. That exact issue is an uncertainty of the quarterback position.
Many people around the league were speculating what General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was going to do. Some people speculated that the Vikings would try to trade for Kyler Murray, or from earlier reports before the trade deadline former first overall pick Jameis Winston.
But within hours of the trade deadline coming to an end and many hours of anticipation Kwesi reached out to the Cardinals and acquired 28 year old journeyman Joshua Dobbs.
Dobbs started his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers where he would remain for his first three years of his career. He was then traded to the Jaguars and only a year later he would end up back in Pittsburgh. He would then find himself on the Lions practice squad and within the same year starting in the final two games for the Tennessee Titans with a playoff berth on the line. Less than a year later he would find himself starting for the Cardinals and now being shipped to Minnesota.
Dobbs has been the starter for the Cardinals in place for Kyler Murray who is soon coming off of the IR. Dobbs has led the Cardinals to a 1-6 start to the season and recently was told from Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon that he was going to be benched for their week 9 matchup for their rookie quarterback Clayton Tune.
In Dobbs seven total starts he had a total of 1,569 passing yards with 8 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions.
The Vikings traded a sixth round pick for quarterback Joshua Dobbs and a conditional seventh round pick that could turn into a sixth if certain criterias are met.
This move by Kwesi has been criticized by many and praised by few. The problem arises in the fact that many fans are sick of a mediocre quarterback and a mediocre draft pick. Most wanted a full on commitment of Kwesi to make a deal for a quarterback and commit to chasing a ring, or see what Hall has in him and maybe find a diamond in the rough. With Hall worse comes to worse we get a high draft pick. More or less in the broad sense of things the ceiling of potential with Hall is considerably much higher with much more excitement.
Luckily recent reports have stated that Hall will be the starter for the week 9 matchup versus the Falcons, who much like the Vikings will be fighting an injury to their starting quarterback. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has stated that Dobbs will be ready to play if things do not go as planned for the rookie.
