Green Bay Packers OTAs Media Day Three Takeaways and Analysis

For the last time in this OTA session, the media was allowed to visit and record parts of the Green Bay Packers practice yesterday. Like we have for the previous two sessions, we will be analyzing what we were able to see in the Packers June 6th practice.

Tucker Kraft was back on the field at yesterday’s practice aftering not being present last week. Notable players still absent from practice include Grant Dubose, Dontayvion Wicks, Jake Hansen, and Dallin Leavitt. Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas were still absent as well, with Stokes present but still limited and not participating in team drills.

Offense

The Packers lined up in 12 personnel at the start of practice yesterday. The first team offensive lineup for 11-on-11s was as follows:

QB: Jordan Love

RB: Aaron Jones

WRs: Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs

TE: Josiah Deguara and Luke Musgrave

O-Line: Bakhtiari at LT, Jenkins at LG, Josh Myers at C, Jon Runyan Jr at RG, and Yosh Njiman at RT with Zach Tom rotating in.

The team also had a secondary offensive line of Caleb Jones at LT, Sean Rhyan at LG, Zach Tom at C, Royce Newman at RG, and Luke Tenuta at RT.

Takeaways

The theme for these OTA sessions thus far for Jordan Love has been inconsistency. The previous two sessions we had access to saw Love make some great throws, but also make some questionable plays.

Yesterday’s practice was better for Love. Outside of the very last play of team drills, he was on fire. Yesterday’s practice was easily Love’s best practice. His release looks smoother and quicker, no doubt thanks to Tom Clements return as QB coach. His connection with Romeo Doubs is electric, hitting him on a corner route on an impressive throw for a score in 11-on-11s.

Love has also clearly learned a thing or two sitting behind Rodgers the past couple seasons. His hard count not only got the defense to jump multiple times, but also got his own offensive line a couple times.

The young wide receiver corps has been showing a lot of promise. Doubs and Watson are the clear starting two wide receivers for the team and had great days in practice yesterday. Rookie Jayden Reed continues to impress as well, showing off his crisp route running and great catching ability.

Rookie tight ends Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave have been getting plenty of snaps in the starting lineup in team drills as well. Musgrave is proving to likely be the better deep threat of the two, with better route running and speed on deep routes. Both tight ends have been great in the passing game in practice so far, and are likely to be the starting two tight ends, with Deguara assuming h-back duties.

Some final notes on the offensive side of the ball: Samori Toure continues to cement his place on the roster with another solid day in practice. Rookie QB Sean Clifford had a great day, going nine-for-11 in team drills with two touchdowns to Jeff Cotton and Malik Heith. Last season’s preseason stud Tyler Goodson continues to impress as well, making a run for the team’s third running back slot.

Defense

The team lined up in the nickel formation, meaning there were only two defensive lineman and a fifth defensive back. The first team defensive lineup in 11-on-11 was as follows:

DL: Kenny Clark and TJ Slaton, with Devonte Wyatt getting snaps

EDGEs: Preston Smith and Lukas Van Ness

MLBs: De’Vondre Campbell and Quay Walker

CBs: Shemar Jean-Charles and Corey Ballentine, Keisean Nixon at the nickel back

Safety: Darnell Savage and Rudy Ford, with Jonathan Owens, Tarvarious Moore, and Anthony Johnson Jr getting snaps.

Takeaways

Devonte Wyatt had a great day in practice yesterday. Wyatt rotated in the starting lineup, making the most of it by recording multiple pressures and would-be sacks.

Lukas Van Ness made his first start in the starting lineup yesterday and did not disappoint. He and Kingsley Enagbare, who rotated in with him, were great at setting the edge and containing the run game. The edge rushers in general were great at containing the run yesterday. Hopefully this is sign the Packers will finally have a good run defense. With Gary likely to be limited to start the season, it is refreshing to see Van Ness and Enagbare perform well in his place.

With Alexander, Douglas, and Stokes all absent from 11-on-11s, the secondary had a lot of rotating pieces. Corey Balentine and rookie Carrington Valentine played well in their snaps at corner. Balentine had multiple PBUs while covering Doubs.

At safety, arguably the biggest question mark of the defense to this point, multiple players recorded snaps in team drills. Johnson Jr notably made a great breakup in team drills and overall had a solid day. Moore was responsible for the interception on Love’s one horrible play of the day, snagging a cross-body duck throw.

This concludes the Packers’ OTA sessions where media are allowed to be present. The team will hold their mandatory minicamp from June 13th through June 15th. This will be the first time we see players like Jaire and Rasul return to practice. Their return will hopefully provide Love with a tougher challenge in team drills.
