About 2 years ago the Lions organization was shaken up by the trading of Matthew Stafford by the new regime for quarterback Jared Goff and picks. Ever since then the question has been simple: Can Jared Goff be the future for Detroit, or will the Lions have to draft a QB soon? The majority of Lions fans have been overwhelmingly against keeping Jared Goff around for longer than this season. Well, as it stands over halfway through the second season of Jared Goff’s tenure, it’s time for a lot of Lions fans to apologize.
Before Jared even played a snap for Detroit, the reception from fans was majority negative. There were many advocating for the Lions to draft Malik Willis after a season, not taking into account that the Lions offense wasn’t the big issue last season, it was the defense. After deciding to give Goff another season under center, Brad Holmes used the offseason to patch up some of the holes on defense and add another couple of offensive playmakers to help Goff out and see how he can produce, and he’s done that and more.
Despite most certainly hearing the noise from Lions fans to draft CJ Stroud, Bryce Young, or another college QB, Goff has stepped up to lead the 6th highest scoring offense in the league. He’s top 10 in passing yards with 3,022, TD’s with 19 and is commanding the only offense to score 30 points on 6 different occasions, and most importantly he’s taken care of the football, having only one turnover in the last 5 games. He’s formed a beautiful connection with standout second year receiver Amon Ra St. Brown, who had a fantastic game against Jacksonville. The offense has been lighting it up, and gave the defense time to figure it out as well to gear up for a potential playoff push.
Goff has more than likely earned at least 3rd season in Detroit with his play this season, and the two time pro bowler and NFC champion may be in the middle of a resurgence of his young career, and Lions fans who wrote him off before ever giving him a chance owe him a major apology
