Week 5 boom: Jamaal Williams – MEH
Week 5 bust: Jared Goff – HIT
The Detroit Lions are in a familiar spot, currently sitting atop the NFL Draft order. Through only six games, the Lions have been filled with chaos, which questions if Dan Campbell is the right man for the head coaching position. Thankfully for Campbell, he has fared much better at home, which is where this week’s game against the Miami Dolphins will take place. The air attack will be a key component to watch on both sides of the ball.
Boom: Amon-Ra St. Brown
The Lions have only scored six points in their last two games combined, highlighting the significance of Amon-Ra St. Brown in their offense. St. Brown has missed time due to multiple injuries, but is expected to play this week against Miami. With many of the Lions’ starting offensive players questionable to play, St. Brown must be a meaningful contributor. Jared Goff should look to target his best weapon on the outside, especially if some backup offensive linemen are forced to play. The Dolphins have allowed the sixth most yards to opposing receivers and have been unable to consistently slow down the passing game. While Jared Goff has struggled as of late, he should benefit from having St. Brown back in the lineup. Lastly, St. Brown will see little action against the Dolphins’ best cornerback, Xavien Howard, as he often operates from the slot. Thus, he should see favorable matchups and a heavy volume.
Bust: Alex Anzalone
There should be no doubt that the Lions’ middle linebacker Alex Anzalone will have issues covering the Dolphins’ versatile weapons. Receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle both rank in the top five in receiving yards, which they have compiled in all parts of the field. They are both exceptional route runners, particularly in the middle of the field. Anzalone lacks the athletic prowess to compete with Hill and Waddle, and could be susceptible to explosive plays between the second and third levels. Even Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Kendricks had struggles against the Dolphins due to these weapons. Tight end Mike Gesicki has taken advantage as well, attacking the seams in opposing defenses. Anazalone will have his work cut out for him this week, and it is unlikely that the rest of the Lions’ miserable defense will provide any help.
