Chicago Bears fall to the Cleveland Browns 17-20
An extremely disappointing ending to the game, the Chicago Bears were defeated by the Cleveland Browns in a thriller that ended in heartbreak for Bears fans. Despite entering the fourth quarter leading 17-7, the Browns would score 13 unanswered points to top the Bears in this demoralizing afternoon game.
The offense looked extremely lackluster, scoring only one offensive touchdown and field goal on the day. Quarterback Justin Fields looked solid, showing his talent despite a mediocre statline of completing 19/40 passes and struggling to get the offense moving all day. A few costly drops and poor offensive play forced the Bears to punt the ball 10 times, which needs to improve.
The defensive side of the ball kept the Bears in the game today, although falling apart in the last few minutes of the game. Through the first three quarters, the Bears held the Browns to 7 points, a big success. Defensive end Montez Sweat continued to dominate, as he totaled 2.5 sacks and created pressure all afternoon. Meanwhile rookie cornerback Tyrique Stevenson played solid, making some big pass deflections and grabbed a crucial interception in the red zone. Safety Eddie Jackson and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds also ended with an interception each, with Edmunds returning his for a touchdown. Star cornerback Jaylon Johnson continues to shut down opposing wide receivers, but the defense couldn’t keep the Browns locked down for the whole game.
The final two offensive drives by the Browns saw them score points on each drive, a disappointing collapse. First, the Bears defense allowed the Browns to bomb a deep 51-yard touchdown to tie the game. However, when the Bears offense once again failed to get anything going and were forced to punt, the Bears defense allowed big plays yet again to allow the Browns to kick a game-winning field goal. The final nail in the coffin came as time expired; as a last ditch effort Hail Mary, the ball was tipped up in the air and basically in wide receiver Darnell Mooney’s arms, but he couldn’t corral it for the touchdown. As the ball harmlessly fell to the ground, the Bears final chance slipped with it.
