A Look Into New Packers Safety: Jonathan Owens

The 2023 offseason has been an eventful one full of top-name free agents, for the Packers, maybe not so much. But Friday, May 12th the Packers signed former Texans safety Johnathan Owens to a 1-year deal. Jonathan Owens was an undrafted free agent in 2018 who worked his way up into a respectable starting campaign for the Texans in 2022 as a strong safety. In his 2022 season he started all 17 games and finished 21st in the league in tackles with 125. This was good for second among all safeties. With a low missed tackle percentage and zero penalties on the season, Owens showed elite discipline and attention to detail throughout the season. As the Packers have yet to re-sign Adrian Amos, it’s safe to assume they are electing to move on from their long time star. In doing so however, they are losing all familiarity at the safety position. By signing Owens, they find themselves someone to fill the void of Amos. Owens bring competition in the safety room, holds starter experience, and can easily fill the void of tackling ability left by Amos.  As an added bonus, the team also adds a new elite member to the celebrity ring of fans with this signing, Owens’ multi-medal olympian newlywed spouse Simone Biles. Owens started his NFL career undrafted and severely injured early and worked his way into a legitimate starter, now newlywed and seemingly happy with his new opportunity in Wisconsin, there’s a realistic chance that at only 27 years old his best football is ahead of him.
